SUMMARY:Saying Grace
DESCRIPTION:We usher in our month exploring the gift of gratitude by reflecting on the power of giving thanks – before sharing a meal\, while gazing upon a tree ablaze with fall color\, when receiving unexpected good news\, and when dealing with life’s disappointments. How can we enrich our lives by tune ourselves to the key of gratitude? \n

SUMMARY:An Uncommon Education: The Allen School
DESCRIPTION:An Uncommon Education: The Allen School is a 40-minute documentary film that highlights the educators\, students\, and legacy of the West Newton English and Classical School\, better known as the Allen School (1854-1900). Founded in 1854 by local Unitarians\, educators\, and reformers Nathaniel T. Allen and Cyrus Peirce\, the Allen School was a remarkable fifty-year experiment in progressive education. From coeducation and racial integration to physical education and learning through play\, the school pioneered new ways of teaching and learning in the United States. The Allen School was located on the site where FUUSN now stands. \nProduced by Historic Newton\, this documentary describes foundational events in the early life of our historic church. A panel discussion with these distinguished guests will follow the film: \n\nKaty Haywood\, Co-Historian of Myrtle Baptist Church\nSara Goldberg\, Historic Newton Curator of Manuscripts and Photographs\nLisa Dady\, Historic Newton Executive Director\nJoe Hunter\, Producer of An Uncommon Education\nBob Ellertsen\, Moderator and FUUSN member\n\nFree and Open to the Public. SUMMARY:Blessing of the Animals - Multigenerational Service (No Religious Exploration)
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to bring your favorite furry\, hairy\, feathered\, scaly\, or shelled pet to the Sunday morning service at FUUSN. We will celebrate our kinship with all living creatures in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi and share one of his iconic stories of compassion. This will be a service for all generations\, and we encourage you to invite pet-loving friends to join us! \nYou can bring your beloved creatures along or bring a photo of them; we will also offer a memorial for pets who are no longer with us (who can also be represented with a photo). \nDeciding whether to bring your pet or bring a photo? If you can say yes to these things\, please bring ‘em: \n\nI can keep my pet in my physical control (via leash\, carrier\, box etc.) indoors for 45 minutes\nMy pet won’t be overly stressed by the presence of other animals or humans\n\nIf you are someone who is allergic to animals but would like to be present for the service\, we recommend that you wear a mask and sit in the pews near the rear of the sanctuary to limit your exposure.

SUMMARY:One In Name\, in Honor One: FUUSN's 175th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:On October 24\, 1868\, a group of leaders in education\, agriculture and politics officially founded a new Unitarian congregation in West Newton. Among them were luminaries we still celebrate: Horace Mann\, Nathaniel Allen\, as well as lesser-known folks whose decisions and foresight have made possible what this congregation is today. We’ll join in story\, song and imagining some key points in our history this morning as we kick off our 175th anniversary celebration!

SUMMARY:The Gospel of Universalism
DESCRIPTION:Rev. Parisa Parsa \nToday’s world desperately needs the message of our Universalist heritage: the bold claim that all are saved and that we must tune ourselves to the love of God present in us\, among us\, and beyond us. Continuing our theme of Heritage\, we will explore some of the radical thinkers who kept this theology alive through history and consider how we might express the Universalism our heritage today.

SUMMARY:Beethoven and Transcendence
DESCRIPTION:How does music take us beyond our assumed identities?  The ‘physical world’ of Beethoven’s final piano sonata fills no more than 27 minutes of clock time\, but through it we experience a sound world in which time seems to stand still and we gain the experience of individual identity merging with a larger whole.  Lois Shapiro\, FUUSN ‘s concert pianist and music educator will help us understand the intricacies of this work and show us its force\, from beginning to end. \nNote: This service is in person only in the Parish Hall. SUMMARY:Summer Chime Concert
DESCRIPTION:All are invited to bring blankets or lawn chairs to FUUSN’s front lawn for a casual (free) concert. Feel free to bring a picnic supper. In case of rain\, indoor seating will be provided. \nEach concert will last about one hour. During the summer series chimers will include Paul Antonucci\, Bob Feldman\, Cathy Longley-Cook\, and Jenny Xia\, and quite likely others. View our program. \nDid you notice the silence? FUUSN’s bells went silent in February when chimers noticed damage to a pulley. Repairs in June were made by John McShane\, on behalf of his family’s firm\, McShane Bell Co. Back in 1916\, the same company that forged and installed FUUSN’s bells! \nThe chime consists of eleven bells with a combined weight just shy of seven tons. Each bell is engraved with a motto that FUUSN chose\, giving insight into the the theology and values of 1916 West Newton Unitarians. Listed from largest to smallest\, the bells are engraved as follows:\nMy tongue shall tell of the Fatherhood of God;\nMy voice shall prophesy of the Brotherhood of Man;\nI speak of the saving power of the good life;\nI proclaim the freedom of the mind to think and of the soul to worship;\nI testify to the supreme worth of human service;\nI ring out for the selfishness and meanness of men;\nI ring in the generous spirit and the blameless life;\nI sound abroad the joy at the heart of the world;\nI cry the eternal progress of mankind;\nI am the voice of Faith\, Hope and Love;\nI sing the valors and the excellence of the humble children of God. \nView our Flyer: Summer Chimes Flyer 2023nb \nWould you be interested in learning how to play the chime? We are always looking for new chimers. If so\, or if you have questions\, contact Gayle Smalley\, email: gaylesmalley at mindspring dot com.

SUMMARY:Deepening Connection to Spirit through Silence and Song
DESCRIPTION:Practicing mindfulness and singing together allows a place in us to open enough that we can hear or feel or sense the Spirit in us. The First Unitarian Universalist Society of Newton (FUUSN) will host an informal Sunday Service at 10:15 on August 6 that explores a few of the paths of practice that lead to mindfulness.  We will breathe together\, meditate\, listen deeply\, and sing together. With Suzanne Buchko and Joan Caplan\, you are invited to experience the connection between the stillness of quiet reflection and the singing of our souls. \nNote: This service is in person in the Parish Hall only. No online service.

If so\, or if you have questions\, contact Gayle Smalley\, email: gaylesmalley@mindspring.com.
