SUMMARY:Over 60s Sponsored Presentation: Philosophical Religion: FUUSN’s Heritage
DESCRIPTION:January 26\, 2025\, 12-1:30 pm\nAlliance Room and Zoom\nLunch bites provided\nPresenter: Arthur Anderson\, JD\, author of The Transcendentalists and the Death and Rebirth of Western Philosophical Religion: Part 1\, Ancient Philosophy as a Religious Way of Life; Part 2\, Abrahamic Religion against Freedom of Thought\nIndependent Researcher\, Teacher \nIn a radical departure from Abrahamic faiths\, the Transcendentalist movement in 19th century Unitarianism saw the locus of religious authority as residing within the individual rather than a religious organization or sacred text. Transcendentalists were greatly influenced by ancient philosophy as a religious way of life which was based on the locus of religious authority within the individual. Arthur will discuss how the freedom of religious thought found at FUUSN and in contemporary UU is rooted in classical philosophical religion or ancient philosophy as a religious way of life. \nThis will be a wonderful opportunity to discuss and learn from Arthur who has an historical perspective providing an illuminating look at history\, our Concord/Boston inspiring figures/FUUSN founders in 1848 and our Unitarian roots. Do join us Sunday\, January 26\, 2025 for this Stimulating Presentation! \nSmall bites for lunch.\nZoom link sent out close to the event. \nInformation re: A. Anderson’ research and work can be found at https://arthur-anderson.com/

SUMMARY:Social Action Speaker Lunch: Providing Resources to Empower the Unhoused in MetroWest
DESCRIPTION:Everyone is invited for our monthly free lunch at noon at the Unitarian Universalist Society\, 1326 Washington Street\, West Newton. Chloe-Rose Crouch will speak about her work as manager of operations at the Community Day Center of Waltham. Many volunteers from Newton support the center’s programs with their time or warm clothing and other needed supplies. The Center provides day shelter and support services to adults who are experiencing homelessness. Each year\, CDCW houses an average of 24 people\, holds 96 substance abuse recovery meetings\, sends approximately 36 people to rehab and detox facilities\, and sleeps 20 people from December-April at their Winter Night Program. \nThey strive to create a safe\, judgment-free culture that is grounded in hospitality\, compassion and mutual respect. They provide refuge and rest for those who need it\, and support services to improve the lives of those in our community who are struggling. They need volunteers to join them as they work together to improve the lives of those who are experiencing homelessness. Whether it be through volunteering your time\, donating goods or funds\, or partnering with them\, you can help to make a difference. They rely on the support of volunteers and donors to provide the help that’s needed for their guests to improve their lives. \nPlease RSVP \nVolunteer to help out

SUMMARY:Social Justice Action Presentation: Leadership Development in the Wake of the Recent Election Results
DESCRIPTION:Everyone is invited for our monthly free lunch at noon after coffee hour in the Alliance Room (RSVP required). UU Rev. Jo Murphy will speak about her work as executive director of the UU Mass Action organization coordinating with all the UU congregations in Massachusetts. She will emphasize leadership development in the wake of the recent election\nresults. \nUU Mass Action was founded by Lynn Holbein\, former Co-Chair of the FUUSN Social Action Council before she moved to North Carolina. Their mission is to organize and mobilize UUs in Massachusetts to confront oppression. They provide pathways towards justice and identify opportunities in which we can live our shared values. They build relationships with congregational leaders and work to develop their leadership and engage them in our statewide campaigns. These are campaigns on climate and economic justice\, immigrant justice\, housing justice\, youth engagement and more. Every year in April they lead all congregational teams to lobby their state representatives and senators about pending legislation that need sponsorships and support. Rev. Jo worked as a chaplain at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston for the past two years\, in addition to being a case manager supporting people living with brain injuries. She is a volunteer organizer with the Boston Immigration Justice Accompaniment Network and with the Boston chapter of Standing Up for Racial Justice. \nPlease RSVP (required).

SUMMARY:Social Justice Action Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Everyone is invited for our monthly free lunch after coffee hour in the Alliance Room. Arthur Bembury\, Executive Director – Partakers\, will speak about his experiences supporting hundreds of prisoners to get a college education to improve their opportunities of success after leaving prison. Partakers has helped people get B.U. degrees while they are behind bars. Partakers is supported by an extraordinary and growing group of over 400 volunteer mentors. SUMMARY:Boston Pride
DESCRIPTION:FUUSN IS GOING TO BOSTON PRIDE AGAIN! \nBefore COVID\, FUUSN participated in the Pride Parade for decades – someone must know how long – and we’re going back on Saturday\, June 8th! \nWe have a registered team\, at least 20 interested folx\, and are figuring out logistics. Some will meet at Arlington Street Church at 8:45 for pre-parade worship\, or go in together on the train. Some will carpool or ride-share from FUUSN or from someone’s home and meet at Copley Square at 9:00. We will carry a banner and dance in the streets with bubbles and percussion (maybe). Looking for fun ideas! \nIt’s only 1.7 miles from Copley Square to Boston Common. \nPlease read more at bostonprideforthepeople.org before you ask any questions\, and respond to Jacki Rohan at rainbow-umbrella@fuusn.org with a firm commitment and number of family and friends. The first 25 folx will automatically be on the team. After that we need additional team captains to be trained; our absolute max is 75 humans.

SUMMARY:Inciting Joy
DESCRIPTION:Rev. Parisa Parsa \nWe celebrate the theme of renewal with meditations in word and song on the things that bring us joy\, tracing them all the way back to their beginnings as Ross Gay does beautifully in his book Inciting Joy. Creation Dance will offer their movement meditation on renewal and sources of joy\, and we will lift up memories of those who have passed in our monthly ritual of memorial candles. Our offering will benefit the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute’s Mother’s Day Walk for Peace.
