DESCRIPTION:You are invited by the FUUSN Racial Justice and Reparations Task Force to a presentation by CARL W. McCARGO\, M.S. \nCarl has been a UU member in Springfield\, MA for 38 years and is a long-time member of the Unitarian Universalist for A Just Economic Community (UUJEC). Carl’s UUJEC “Task Group for Reparations” in 2022 wrote “Anti-Racism and Reparations via Restorative Justice.” His task group has developed a six-part curriculum entitled “Next Steps Into Anti-racism and Reparations.” \nHe will speak on society’s “isms\,” such as\, racism\, sexism\, classism. He will describe perspectives that speaks to the legitimacy and need for reparation and voices that address how we can change that consciousness that created and gave rise to our chattel enslavement history. He is a democracy activist who realizes the connection between addressing racial division as a precondition toward strengthening our democracy on the local and national level. He is an organizer\, writer and public speaker.  He enjoys talking to youth about civic engagement. He delights in his children\, Nigel\, Marcus and Farrell\, and the regular consumption of the delicacies transmitted by his parents\, including sweet potato pie\, and oxtail soup. The Newport Jazz Festival\, West Africa and the Smithsonian National Museum of Black History and Culture in Washington D.C.

A reflection and ritual to renew ourselves for the journey. \nThe Rev. Mary Margaret Earl has served as Executive Director and Senior Minister of the Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry for 9 years. In this ministry\, she strengthens connections between UUs and the Roxbury neighborhood where the UUUM operates. She has served on the leadership team of Moral Movement Massachusetts\, the Roxbury Cultural Network\, and currently serves on the search committee for the new Roxbury Community College president. Prior to her arrival at the UU Urban Ministry\, she spent 10 years at a faith-based nonprofit in RI serving the homeless community\, She is past president of the Board of the Rhode Island Coalition for the Homeless\, recipient of the Heroes of Faith Award from the Rhode Island State Council of Churches for her interfaith work\, and received a Courage of Conscience award from the Peace Abbey in Sherborn\, Ma. She is a longtime vegan committed to standing up for nonhuman animals.

DESCRIPTION:An Uncommon Education: The Allen School is a 40-minute documentary film that highlights the educators\, students\, and legacy of the West Newton English and Classical School\, better known as the Allen School (1854-1900). Founded in 1854 by local Unitarians\, educators\, and reformers Nathaniel T. Allen and Cyrus Peirce\, the Allen School was a remarkable fifty-year experiment in progressive education. From coeducation and racial integration to physical education and learning through play\, the school pioneered new ways of teaching and learning in the United States. The Allen School was located on the site where FUUSN now stands. \nProduced by Historic Newton\, this documentary describes foundational events in the early life of our historic church.
