SUMMARY:Worship Service: Feel\, Deal\, Heal
DESCRIPTION:Devin Shmueli\, Director of Family and Community Ministries\nWhile recovery is not one-size-fits-all\, one thing we can learn from people in recovery – living with behavioral or substance addiction – is that it is necessary for one to lean into complex feelings rather than find unhealthy ways to cope. What does feel\, deal\, heal mean? Healing starts with feeling. \nYou may also join us on Zoom: https://bit.ly/fuusn-worship-2024-2025 \nSubmit your Joys and Sorrows here.

SUMMARY:Worship Service: Wheel of Life
DESCRIPTION:Lay Ministry\nThis Sunday your lay ministers will offer our annual Wheel of Life service. This service is where we recognize our collective transitions of the past year – growing our families through births and adoptions; moving on in our lives through graduations\, new jobs\, retirements\, and geographic relocations; coming into our own truer selves through transgendering; deepening our relationships by joining in marriage; acknowledging the changes in ourselves and relationships through separation and divorce; and remembering those loved ones we have lost through death. Please join us either in person or on Zoom. \n\n\nIf you would like to have one or more life event shared in the order of service at this service\, please complete this form by Oct 20. Answer only the questions relevant to you. If it is not apparent\, please make sure to include how the person is related to you. We may alter or edit the formatting to increase consistency within the order of service. If you prefer to email your events\, you can send them to Ellen Metzger. FILL OUT IN GOOGLE FORMS\nWe want to include poetry that seems meaningful and appropriate\, especially poetry written by members of the congregation. In this context\, we are focusing on inter-generational listening\, what we have heard and learned both from our elders and those younger than us\, whether easy or challenging to hear. If you have poetry you’d be willing to share for this purpose\, please contact Nancy Mattei.

SUMMARY:Sunday Service on Zoom - Our Philosophical Religion
DESCRIPTION:Is Unitarian Universalism best described as a late offshoot of Protestant Christianity\, or a very late offshoot of Greek philosophy? FUUSN member Arthur Anderson has made a decades-long study of this question resulting in a treatise titled The Transcendentalists and The Death and Rebirth of Western Philosophical Religion. This Sunday\, Arthur will describe his research and open up a new perspective on the history and essential nature of our faith.

SUMMARY:Sunday Service on Zoom - In Defense of Capitalism
DESCRIPTION:As members of a liberal faith\, we are regularly alerted to the importance of disciplining capitalism through initiatives like anti-monopoly legislation\, unionization; and social\, equity and governance policies. In our zeal to discipline capitalism\, however\, have we missed a larger reality – that it is capitalism which is responsible for the economic well-being of our age on which we all depend. FUUSN member Urban Larson addresses these questions regularly in his university teaching. His thoughts for us this Sunday will be an invitation to consider our biases concerning essential economic realities.

SUMMARY:Summer Service on Zoom - Strong in the Broken Places
DESCRIPTION:Singer songwriter Leonard Cohen wrote in his song\, Anthem\, “There is a crack\, a crack in everything. SUMMARY:Summer Service on Zoom - Psychedelics and Spirituality: The Religion with No Name
DESCRIPTION:Today we are experiencing something of a renaissance in the understanding and acceptance of psychedelic experience. The medical community is leading this renaissance as it researches the power of psychedelics to address medical conditions such as addiction and anxiety. Yet throughout history\, psychedelics have been even more centrally valued for their ability to promote spiritual experiences of love and oneness – creating what some have called The Religion With No Name. In this service\, Curt Lamb will lead a discussion of the implications for contemporary spiritual life of the psychedelic renaissance.

SUMMARY:Inciting Joy
DESCRIPTION:Rev. Parisa Parsa \nWe celebrate the theme of renewal with meditations in word and song on the things that bring us joy\, tracing them all the way back to their beginnings as Ross Gay does beautifully in his book Inciting Joy. Creation Dance will offer their movement meditation on renewal and sources of joy\, and we will lift up memories of those who have passed in our monthly ritual of memorial candles. Our offering will benefit the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute’s Mother’s Day Walk for Peace.

SUMMARY:Surrender and Change
DESCRIPTION:Rev. Parisa Parsa \n \nWe often think of change as something we are responsible for initiating\, controlling\, and completing. Attending to transformation\, however\, requires an interesting relationship between active work and letting go. How can practices of surrender help us arrive at the transformation we seek?

SUMMARY:Bending the Arc
DESCRIPTION:Rev. Parisa Parsa \n“I do not pretend to understand the moral universe; the arc is a long one\, my eye reaches but little ways; I cannot calculate the curve and complete the figure by the experience of sight; I can divine it by conscience. And from what I see I am sure it bends toward justice.” \nThese words from Unitarian minister and theologian Theodore Parker in 1853 have taken on new life in their more succinct form paraphrased by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (“The moral arc of the universe is long\, but I believe it bends toward justice.) How do we calculate the curve and complete the figure of the arc\, when so many well-intentioned folks have gone astray? What guides us in the work of creating justice\, and what can keep us humble?

SUMMARY:Being BeLoved
DESCRIPTION:Rev. Parisa Parsa \n \nWe round out our month of exploring the Gift of Liberating Love with a meditation on belonging: giving and receiving the gift of connection in community. Reflecting on the story of Ruth and Naomi\, we’ll explore the risks and the rewards of claiming one another and the kind of love that binds us beyond kinship. What deepens and enriches our connections\, and what can threaten them?
