If you’ve had something you’ve been dying to ask but haven’t found the right moment\, send it ahead of time to parisa@fuusn.org. He delights in his children\, Nigel\, Marcus and Farrell\, and the regular consumption of the delicacies transmitted by his parents\, including sweet potato pie\, and oxtail soup. SUMMARY:Bending the Arc
DESCRIPTION:Rev. Parisa Parsa \n“I do not pretend to understand the moral universe; the arc is a long one\, my eye reaches but little ways; I cannot calculate the curve and complete the figure by the experience of sight; I can divine it by conscience. And from what I see I am sure it bends toward justice.” \nThese words from Unitarian minister and theologian Theodore Parker in 1853 have taken on new life in their more succinct form paraphrased by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (“The moral arc of the universe is long\, but I believe it bends toward justice.) How do we calculate the curve and complete the figure of the arc\, when so many well-intentioned folks have gone astray? What guides us in the work of creating justice\, and what can keep us humble?

SUMMARY:Being BeLoved
DESCRIPTION:Rev. Parisa Parsa \n \nWe round out our month of exploring the Gift of Liberating Love with a meditation on belonging: giving and receiving the gift of connection in community. Reflecting on the story of Ruth and Naomi\, we’ll explore the risks and the rewards of claiming one another and the kind of love that binds us beyond kinship. What deepens and enriches our connections\, and what can threaten them?

SUMMARY:Blessing of the Animals - Multigenerational Service (No Religious Exploration)
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to bring your favorite furry\, hairy\, feathered\, scaly\, or shelled pet to the Sunday morning service at FUUSN. We will celebrate our kinship with all living creatures in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi and share one of his iconic stories of compassion. This will be a service for all generations\, and we encourage you to invite pet-loving friends to join us! \nYou can bring your beloved creatures along or bring a photo of them; we will also offer a memorial for pets who are no longer with us (who can also be represented with a photo). \nDeciding whether to bring your pet or bring a photo? If you can say yes to these things\, please bring ‘em: \n\nI can keep my pet in my physical control (via leash\, carrier\, box etc.) indoors for 45 minutes\nMy pet won’t be overly stressed by the presence of other animals or humans\n\nIf you are someone who is allergic to animals but would like to be present for the service\, we recommend that you wear a mask and sit in the pews near the rear of the sanctuary to limit your exposure.

SUMMARY:Touched and Changed
DESCRIPTION:Rev. Parisa Parsa\, Anne Watson Born & Devin Shmueli \nWe honor our ancient heritage from Judaism with reflections on Rosh Hashanah\, and the ways we are called to live and renew our commitments to justice\, to one another\, and to the divine. We invite you to consider how the practice of offering and receiving welcome might be renewed in your life and in our community life in the weeks to come.

SUMMARY:One In Name\, in Honor One: FUUSN's 175th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:On October 24\, 1868\, a group of leaders in education\, agriculture and politics officially founded a new Unitarian congregation in West Newton. Among them were luminaries we still celebrate: Horace Mann\, Nathaniel Allen\, as well as lesser-known folks whose decisions and foresight have made possible what this congregation is today. We’ll join in story\, song and imagining some key points in our history this morning as we kick off our 175th anniversary celebration!

SUMMARY:The Gospel of Universalism
DESCRIPTION:Rev. Parisa Parsa \nToday’s world desperately needs the message of our Universalist heritage: the bold claim that all are saved and that we must tune ourselves to the love of God present in us\, among us\, and beyond us. Continuing our theme of Heritage\, we will explore some of the radical thinkers who kept this theology alive through history and consider how we might express the Universalism our heritage today.

SUMMARY:Beethoven and Transcendence
DESCRIPTION:How does music take us beyond our assumed identities?  The ‘physical world’ of Beethoven’s final piano sonata fills no more than 27 minutes of clock time\, but through it we experience a sound world in which time seems to stand still and we gain the experience of individual identity merging with a larger whole.  Lois Shapiro\, FUUSN ‘s concert pianist and music educator will help us understand the intricacies of this work and show us its force\, from beginning to end. \nNote: This service is in person only in the Parish Hall. No online service.

SUMMARY:Deepening Connection to Spirit through Silence and Song
DESCRIPTION:Practicing mindfulness and singing together allows a place in us to open enough that we can hear or feel or sense the Spirit in us. The First Unitarian Universalist Society of Newton (FUUSN) will host an informal Sunday Service at 10:15 on August 6 that explores a few of the paths of practice that lead to mindfulness.  We will breathe together\, meditate\, listen deeply\, and sing together. With Suzanne Buchko and Joan Caplan\, you are invited to experience the connection between the stillness of quiet reflection and the singing of our souls. \nNote: This service is in person in the Parish Hall only. No online service.
