FUUSN EVENT: Imara Jones’ Ware Lecture Study Group and Pizza
6-8 pm Friday, March 27th at FUUSN
Join Rainbow Umbrella and FUUSN Action for Democracy Teams on Friday, March 27, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. in the Chapel for a study group and shared meal centered on the Ware Lecture by Imara Jones, the 2025 Ware Lecturer at the UUA General Assembly.
A visionary journalist and changemaker, Imara Jones is an American political journalist and transgender activist and the founder of TransLash Media, a cross-platform journalism organization focused on social justice and equity. Her work spans roles as a host, on-air news analyst, and writer. Jones has held economic policy positions in the Clinton White House, served in communications roles at Viacom, chaired the first-ever United Nations High-Level Meeting on Gender Diversity, and is currently a Soros Equality Fellow. She holds degrees from the London School of Economics and Columbia University.
According to UU World, during the lecture Jones emphasized that Christian nationalists have “captured a major political party,” Jones said the attack on trans rights is a deeply researched and heavily funded effort to “undermine democracy” and warned UUs to “take it deadly seriously.” She added, “One of the ways to counter the role that anti-trans politics is playing in the undermining of democracy is to actually care about trans people.” She urged UUs to take action, including calling their state legislators to oppose anti-trans legislation and challenging people who make anti-trans comments.
Participants are invited to watch the lecture in advance (beginning at 29:00) online here, and then gather for conversation and pizza. Please sign-up to let us know your food preferences. You will recieve information on the format and topics to be discussed in advance.
